If you’re like us, you’ve opened up your morning Skimm, the Betches Sup’ and other various news alerts from your favorite sources and found that it is in fact Equal Pay Day.
You’ve read a lot of opinions – funny, serious and interesting, but what is equal pay day anyway?
Equal Pay Day was established to bring awareness to the pay gap, specifically between men and women.
Why is today equal pay day?
According to CNN Money, equal pay day “symbolically marks how long into the new year full-time working women need to work until their earnings can catch up to what full-time working men earned the year before.” SAY WHAA?
So according to census data, if men chilled at home in their man cave, bachelor pad or other male dwelling from New Years through today without pay – they would still make as much money as women did working all of 2015…well, something like that! Equal pay day changes slightly each year based on the gender pay gap from the year before, but not much has changed in the way of gender pay equality, so Equal Pay Day is almost always at the beginning of April in the United States.
How did this whole thing get started?
A super official committee called the National Committee on Pay Equity coined the term and started the day back in 1996 to bring awareness to the gender pay gap
So does that guy down the hall with my same job definitely make more money?
Not necessarily, but maybe! There are several factors that could affect the difference in pay for men and women including, the types of jobs men and women tend to go for, breaks in work, education levels, discrimination and the list goes on.
I’m really into this issue, what should I do?
