On photoshoots, I often get asked what I do for my skin. Though I have been genetically blessed with a pretty blemish free complexion, I still like to take great care of my skin and ensure that it will keep looking glowing for years to come! Here are some of my top tips.
- Take Off Your Makeup!
Though this should go without saying you should never, ever sleep in your makeup! I don’t care if you don’t get home until 6AM, take it off. Also, use a good makeup remover so you don’t have to tug and pull at your skin to get it really clean. My personal favorite is Bioderma (makeup artist tip!).
- Hydrate Inside and Out
I drink a large glass of lemon water first thing in the morning nearly every day. I also try to drink my greens and stay hydrated throughout the day. A good moisturizer is also key in keeping skin glowing.
The best anti-aging treatment (especially at a young age) is sunscreen! Prevention goes a long way. I never leave the house without sunscreen on my face, no matter how cloudy or gray. At least get a foundation with sunscreen or use a tinted moisturizer that doubles with an SPF factor.
- Fill in Nutritional Gaps
Assess if maybe there is a dietary reason your skin is less than shimmery. I also find it helpful to supplement occassional (with raw, organic whole food vitamins of course). Zinc seems to be particlarly helpful for skin and healing. I like this one from Garden of Life.
- Avoid Alcohol
Okay, okay you don’t have to completely abstain from the occasional cocktail, but alcohol can be severely dehydrating and wreak havoc on otherwise glowing skin. Try to limit it to once a week if possible, and re-hydrate the next day with good-for-you drinks like coconut water or cold-pressed vegetable juice.
- Get the Right Products
Make sure you are using the right products for your skin type! I used to use acne products in my teens without realizing I had dry skin already and didn’t need it! Once I switched to suitable products, my skin became even softer and more supple.
- Wash Your Pillowcase
Even if you don’t wash your sheets every couple of days, at least throw your main pillowcase in the wash. This will go miles in keeping your skin free and clear.
Though we may not need it during this muggy New York summer, in winter months I find it extremely helpful to use a cool-mist humidifier in my bedroom. Added bonus, humidifiers can also do wonders for overall health in the dry winter months!
- Take Breaks
I go at least one day a week makeup-free. I like to let my skin rest and breathe occasionally.
- Mineral Makeup
In the same vein as taking makeup breaks, I have been loving mineral makeup lately. I wanted something that felt like I wasn’t wearing any makeup at all, and mineral makeup seems to be the perfect solution. Its light, doesn’t cake, and is perfect for summer when liquid makeup can add a little too much sheen.
- Treat Yourself to a Facial
Every couple of months I like to treat myself to a really good facial. There are some things you just can’t do yourself (like extractions and really deep treatments). After a few months of caring for your own skin, let a professional take it on and see how your already glowing skin improves!
