I know there’s a full on health war on sugar right now…
But I’m totally in on the dark side. Sugar is my weakness and I have no intention of stopping. I love desserts and one of the best things about NYC is all the truly amazing, creative, and delicious desserts around. Here are my top five of the moment:
Rare Bird Sweets: Totally a game changer and my favorite out of everything I tried at OMG Dessert Goals. Rare Bird Sweets makes the most inventive and beautiful eclairs (and by the looks of their website… they also make a funfetti macaron?! Omg need). I got the Purple Lotus Puff and it was just as delicious as it was beautiful. It’s a bamboo charcoal puff, filled with forbidden rice pudding, and taro pastry cream… and then it’s topped with taro cream and mango popping boba! The flavors were so different and inventive, but also so well executed! It had the perfect amount of sweetness and I loved the cake/cream/boba texture contrast! They’re at the LIC Flea & Food market every Saturday, and you can also order them online.
Johan’s Fresh Chocolate Mousse: These were at OMG Dessert Goals, but sadly I didn’t get to try them because I was all sugared out after eating a million other things. All is good though, because I got a little package of them for home! So fresh (it’s never frozen). So silky, so fluffy, so creamy. I’m partial towards the dark chocolate one, but I did sprinkle some lavender on the white chocolate one and it was lit! I love that Johan uses 70% dark cocoa in his dark chocolate mousse, so it has just the right amount of sweetness. Order them online or find them at various specialty stores in New York.
Donuts: Yeah I know, it’s a category, not one specific dessert or brand. But with so many amazing donuts in NYC, who can just pick one favorite? I’ve always loved Dough, Doughnut Plant, Doughnut Project, and now I’m glad that OMG Dessert Goals introduced me to Underwest Donuts so I can add it to the list. Underwest Donuts are a little more dense the others, which isn’t better or worse, just different, which is good! Gotta do a shoutout here to the Doughnut Project PB&J 2.0 donut though…. Blackberry glaze, peanut butter whip, and blackberry jam. I die. Ok, maybe that one is my favorite donut.
Bibble & Sip: I can’t always get the Rare Bird Sweets puff, but Bibble & Sip cream puffs are an amazing everyday option. The only annoying thing about this place is that the cream puffs only come out fresh at noon everyday…. Pro move: get your coworker who lives in Hell’s Kitchen to pick some up on Sunday afternoon and bring it in on Monday. The Puffs are still surprisingly fresh the next day… they don’t get mushy at all. The matcha cream puffs and earl grey cream puffs…. Eat one for your first breakfast and one for your second breakfast. I did, no shame.
Coolhaus: When I went to school in LA, my best friend and I used to stalk the shit out of the Coolhaus truck. I still remember the first time I ever had a Coolhaus ice cream sandwich. It was honestly life changing. I chose the Dirty Mint Chip ice cream, and from then on that was the only ice cream I ever wanted in LA. It’s a mojito, in an ice cream form, with two cookies, and when its 72 and sunny every day, that is what you want every day. When I moved to NY this was genuinely one of the things I was saddest about leaving behind. But then I found out at OMG Dessert Goals that Coolhaus also has trucks in NYC!!! And I tried the fried chicken and waffles flavor there…. Holy hell it was game changing. If you wanna stalk the truck with me lmk ASAP and I’ll be there.
Dominique Ansel: Ok everything here is perfect. I once ate an equivalent of a whole pie in eight different flavors here (they were hosting Pie Night). But if I had to pick one thing, it would hands down definitely be the madeleines. Made to order so they’re piping hot out of the oven and truly perfection.
Lady M: I don’t know if this is basic, but whatever… these are my favorite cakes in NYC. I’ve been three times in the last two weeks. I’m a fan of all the millecrepe cakes, but I also recently tried the flourless chocolate cake and it was #worthit.
Oops, that was six! There are so many amazing desserts in NYC so my list is always changing and growing, but I highly recommend that you try these! Also, I’m fiiiiinally hitting up Four and Twenty Blackbirds this weekend, and I’m pretty sure I’ll have to update this list for their pie ☺
