One of the best things about “adulting” is finally realizing your mom is truly the ultimate BFF. She knows everything about you, can laugh about your questionable choice in men, and won’t judge you for drinking before noon – she might even join you. One of the best ways to nourish those mother-daughter bonds is a girls trip. Below we rounded up 10 destinations perfect for a weekend getaway.
Charleston features historic charm, delicious food and endless shopping – essentially the top three requirements for a grills weekend. Visit the classic Boone Hall Plantation (where The Notebook was filmed) and take a carriage ride through the city to truly experience Charleston culture and history. King St. is full of adorable boutiques, including The Skinny Dip, a brand new shopping collective and New Yorkers who judge a city solely on its’ brunch options will be impressed – Charleston’s brunch game is strong.
Fresh oysters, lobster and clams – yes, please! Portland is a seafood lover’s paradise. Whether you’re enjoying a classic lobster roll on the waterfront at Porthole or a more adventurous take on seafood at Central Provisions a trip to Portland means eating 24/7, Take a Lucky Catch Cruise to get up close and personal look at what it takes to be a lobsterman and then relax with a seaweed body wrap at Portland Regency Hotel & Spa.
Scottsdale is pretty much synonymous with spa weekend. For an ultra-luxe experience check into The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician and you honestly don’t need to leave until checkout. Splurge-worthy spa treatments include a Papaya Quench Wrap and Hypnotherapy to enhance sleep and reduce stress. The glorious outdoor pool is enveloped in mountains and the sunsets are worthy of their own trip.
If you’re looking for a classic New England beach getaway – aka a place to wear head to toe Jack Rogers and Lilly Pulitzer, head to Newport. Take a step back in time and tour The Newport Mansions and even stay in one yourselves – once a historic mansion, The Chanler is now an elegant hotel. Start the day with a Morning Mimosa Sail around Narragansett Bay (which is how every day should start IMO) and spend the rest of the afternoon on the idyllic Newport beach before checking out the adorable downtown for dinner – The Red Parrott’s lobster pizza will not disappoint.
If you love live music and food trucks (I mean, who doesn’t) Austin is your place. The city’s low key, relaxed vibe is makes it appealing to pretty much everyone. Make the Four Seasons Austin your home base – its’ lakefront location provides easy access to kayaking and paddle boarding while the close proximity to Rainey St. means if you need to stay out a little later than mom one night (or vice versa!) you can feel safe heading home on your own. If the hotel pool is more crowded than you’d like head over to Barton Springs where there’s plenty of room to lounge.
Chicago’s best kept secret is most definitely the beach. Stay in the Gold Coast neighborhood and you’ll also have super easy access to the Magnificent Mile (aka endless shopping), Navy Pier and Millennium Park. Even if you aren’t huge baseball fans, you can’t help but have fun at Wrigley during a Cubs game and if they’re away head up to Wrigleyville anyways to watch amongst locals.
A quintessential southern town Savannah is both charming and beautiful. While pedal taverns are fun with girlfriends, opt for a trolley tour of the city with mom followed by a brewery tour at South Bound Brewing Company to fill your day drinking quota. And the city’s lack of open container laws means if you don’t finish that bottle of wine (hey, it could happen) at dinner you can take it with you in a to-go cup to enjoy as you take an evening walk through Forsyth Park before turning in for the night.
Napa Valley, CA
It goes without saying Napa Valley is the wine drinking capital of the U.S. Why not commit to a 24/7 immersive wine weekend complete with The Spa at Meadowood’s signature Cabernet Crush, a warm cabernet grape-seed skin-polishing treatment followed by an application of fragrant, vitamin-rich grape-seed oil and Bartholomew Park Winery’s vineyard yoga experience.
Finger Lakes, NY
The Finger Lakes are the Napa of New York – countless wineries, hiking/biking trails and farm to table eats and vineyard hopping around a lake is not only extremely beautiful but also provides unlimited selfie opportunities. The Inns of Aurora is undoubtedly the best place to stay. An innkeeper will see to your every need and they even have a Director of Serenity who teaches yoga and essential oil blending. It’s an easy trip if California isn’t a possibility and you’ll have just as much fun (and just as much wine!).
St. Pete Beach, FL
While there’s a time and place for Miami, a relaxing girls weekend with mom isn’t it. St. Pete Beach is far calmer with just as much to do. The Grand Plaza Hotel is beautiful and the rooftop bar is a destination in itself. Spend the day lounging on the beach and the night checking out the numerous tiki bars in the area.
