Growing up, my mom and I were always into saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs… anything to do with heat. We would feel so renewed afterwards! So when I found out about HigherDOSE, a space with infrared sauna rooms, I knew I had to check it out.
I visited the East Village location, which is tucked under The Alchemist’s Kitchen. That store is so magical, as is HigherDOSE so it’s really the perfect partnership 🙂
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that each client gets his/her own individual room– the privacy of my own room was such a treat! Within that room, there is a larger space with a water pitcher, sink, and general area to get changed in private before you step through another door into the actual infrared sauna.
I have to admit, one of the main reasons why I was interested in going to HigherDOSE was because of all the colors! Although I’ve turned into an all-black-everything New Yorker, colors are what really get me excited. All the HigherDOSE sauna rooms come with remotes so you can change the room to any color of the rainbow. They have “medical grade chromotherapy lighting”, which is just a fancy way of saying that the colors are also a form of therapy J I chose blue and violet because I needed to relax and feel inspired—don’t worry, they give you a chart that shows you what each color means and can help with. Apparently light therapy also helps with anti-aging by energizing skin cells and stimulating collagen and elastin production, which is a nice added bonus I didn’t think about!
Even though I don’t think you should bring your phone into the sauna (they didn’t say I couldn’t, but I’m pretty sure it would overheat, and I think this time also serves as a digital detox), make sure to charge your phone before you come in so you can play your own music on their speakers. It definitely helps you relax and takes your mind off any overwhelming thoughts.
Since it was my first time, I tried the express, 30 minute session and was able to comfortably stay in the sauna the whole time. I didn’t want to leave, honestly, it felt so good to sweat in there! Another customer told me that I could adjust the temperature since I would likely feel it was too hot on my first session. I didn’t feel the need to but it’s nice to have that option.
The only unpleasant part of the experience was putting my clothes back on after the infrared sauna session! Even though I dried off, it was still annoying to put skin-tight clothes on. I’d definitely recommend coming to HigherDOSE in sweats/joggers or looser workout clothes just for this purpose.
The website says 45 minutes of infrared is equivalent to a 7 day juice cleanse and burns the same amount of calories as running 3-4 miles. While I didn’t try to figure out how many calories I torched, I definitely felt like I got a detox and felt so happy in addition to being relaxed. I can’t wait to come back and hope you guys try it too!
