Barre classes have been all the rage for a few years now, and once you’ve been to one, it’s easy to figure out why this serious body sculpting workout hasn’t faded from the limelight. A few weeks ago, we had the chance to check out Lauren Chiarello’s Barre Fusion at exhale… and I think I’m still sore! After an awesome sweat sesh, we sat down with Lauren to get the 411 on all things barre. Find out what we learned!
Why barre is good for you
First, barre is very low impact, so it’s a nice change from your intense BBG workouts and Tone House classes. The movements Lauren teaches vary from small, range of motion and isometric holds, which literally change the shape of your muscles. “When you feel a burning sensation in your muscles, that’s the magic happening!” says Lauren. Barre is also great for your mental state – the method connects your body and mind through movement and breath. To top it all off, barre improves your posture which we all need after slumping over a computer 10 hours a day!
Barre can give you a killer bod
According to Lauren, attending Core Fusion Barre classes 2-3x a week will literally change your body – she’s lived it herself and has seen the transformation in her students. The movements lengthen, strengthen and tone your legs, arms, glutes + abdominals. Lauren stresses the importance of consistency – “It can be tough to maintain a regular schedule, but find a teacher you love and keep a routine,” she says.
Core Fusion Barre
“Core Fusion Barre infuses core work throughout the entire class. At exhale, all the exercises rely on your core to support you – from planks, weights, thigh, glutes and of course, abdominal work. We also infuse stretching throughout the class in order to lengthen your muscles, improve flexibility + prevent injuries,” says Lauren.
Proper barre attire
What’s a workout class without some cute gear? Lauren says that any kind of “snuggly” pieces of clothing work well for a barre class. Grippy socks are also key to prevent you from slipping when you do more advanced positions at the barre. Lauren recommends pants – either long or capri because of the hands on adjustments. One of Lauren’s fave brands is Sweaty Betty – “they have fun prints and the quality / functionality is excellent,” she says.
“At the moment, I am loving the (Sweaty Betty) Contour Crop Workout Legging. For tops, I’m usually in an exhale tank but if not, Spiritual Gangster has the cutest sayings. My current fave is the “Live in the Sunshine” tank. If you’ve taken my class, you know I am a huge fan of quotes.”
Be sure to check out Lauren’s class at exhale (at the Gansevoort Park) Monday and Tuesday night!
