The long anticipated Solar Eclipse has come and gone, but we’re still in Mercury Retrograde, people…
Mercury retrogrades have a REALLY bad reputation, which is a shame as they happen oh, THREE times a year. That’s a rough total of 2.5 months of thinking that terrible things are going to happen to you. Yikes! Stereotypical scenarios that seem to play out in all Mercury Retrogrades include technological and travel problems, miscommunications, nostalgia for lovers lost and opportunities that passed you by, and though all of this is terribly annoying, we can actually look a little deeper to discover things about ourselves we might not have otherwise realized.
I believe these “hick-ups” that occur during Mercury Retrograde can tell you a tremendous amount about your overall emotional landscape. Are you continuously waiting until the last minute to do absolutely everything? Do you rely heavily on social media? Always show up to work when the clock strikes 9am or 5 minutes late consistently? Keep your feelings in when a friend or boss says something that offends you or do you lash out without thinking of the other person’s existence? Do you have romantic feelings for people who are unavailable? Do you stay heartbroken for a long time? When making a career choice do you think too long and miss the opportunity? Or do you think too quickly and jump the gun? When you spend money are you calculated and long term or do you buy for what you need today?
Mercury is the planet of communication. Ruled by Gemini the social, flirtatious, out of the boxer thinker of the Zodiac and Virgo the earthly practical, get sh*t done goddess of the skies. When in retrograde things don’t happen TO you, they happen FOR you. They say insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results, well what if Mercury retrograde gave you an opportunity, 2.5 months a year to do things a little differently. Instead of going fast you go slow; instead of grabbing your phone on the subway in a huge crowd you grab a book or stay alert and people watch? Instead of blaming the romantic interest for being unavailable you ask yourself why you choose unavailable people. Alternatively, instead of saving all your money and never having fun, live a little and indulge. The retrograde isn’t to torture you; it’s actually to give you a different perspective, one that normally might have passed you by.
The importance of emotional wellness
A healthy heart is reliant on one very fundamental principle; variance. A happy heart is a consistently fluctuating heart. Like our heart, a healthy emotional landscape should also have ebbs and flows. It is important to respond appropriately to stimulus in your life. When you are in one state of emotions for too long, that’s when things begin to get troublesome. Spending too much time in sadness brings depression, too much time in fear brings anxiety, too much time in happiness can bring mania and a lack of empathy for other people’s suffering.
A run is good for the heart right? It makes the heart work in a different way therefore giving the heart the variance it needs to survive and thrive. What if Mercury retrograde was your emotional landscape’s equivalent of a run? Strategically placed in the sky to keep your emotional wellbeing in check. When you go for a run your body has a direct reaction; I need to drink more water, I need to run more, my legs are weaker than my arms, my chest hurts maybe I should quit smoking. You now have information that will allow you to maximize your performance in the long term. Mercury retrograde can do the same. If you are willing to notice the patterns.
How can we optimize the last half of THIS retrograde?
From the forecast of the sky, it appears that we’ve been through the more depressing qualities of the retrograde and are moving towards more understanding until September 5th when the shadow period begins (a brief time that happens after and before every retrograde). For the next 15 days, we’ll be experiencing more of the action Virgo-ian qualities such as changing OR being forced to change the things you don’t like about your life. Prioritizing the things that actually matter to you: ie: enjoying quality time with your friends while your phone gets repaired at Apple. This is the ultimate time to get real, dig deep. What is it you want your life to feel like, look like, smell like. Take those dreams and ask for them. Where are you cheating yourself out of living the life you deserve? It’s time and I mean literally time to take your life into your hands, because as soon as Mercury goes direct you’ll want to be on that wave.
Advice for each sun sign
Aries: The innate tendency is to be impulsive and play through discomfort. Are you missing solid information or ignoring an intuitive feeling? Trust your instincts.
Taurus: Getting your hands dirty has never been the issue for you. Maybe it’s time you give someone else a try? It’s as important to receive as it is to give.
Gemini: Spend time with people who calm you down, people who actively and consistently don’t take advantage of your nature.
Cancer: Find the areas of your life where you are playing too safe. Be willing to step outside those comforts for what your heart truly desires.
Leo: Are you dimming a light for others to shine? Find the balance between sharing and taking. It’ll serve everyone in the long run.
Virgo: What have you done in service for others lately? Take your incredible managerial skills to the soup kitchen, or raise money for a cause you believe in. We need service leaders now more than ever, share your gifts.
Libra: Balance your relationship to others by watching your habits. Are you prone to giving out of fear or love? What area of your life could you give more of yourself too?
Scorpio: Notice the patterns of your indulgence. Food, sex, expensive things? Find the value in what you already have.
Sagittarius: Build community locally. Your gifts are needed here.
Capricorn: Find the shame filled areas of your life, notice when your actions come from shame or a desire to work hard. Find relaxation in doing absolutely nothing (and not feeling bad about it.)
Aquarius: Uphold commitments. Notice where you find it challenging to do so. That could be a great teacher in understanding your relationship to yourself.
Pisces: Keep swimming. The water has been murky but there is fresh sea just ahead, close your eyes and let go of uncertainty. Change is fast approaching and it’s going to be big.
