Highlighting, strobing, glowing to the heavens… call it what you may but highlighters have made a true splash in the beauty industry in the past few years and it’s here to stay.
Highlighting the face to bring certain features forward is not a new trend; it dates back to 20th century Hollywood and theater because highlighter made a character more believable and also helped the audience see the actor’s face.
Within the past three years or so, the highlighting trend has made a huge comeback in beauty and now every brand has their own spin on it.
Because of this it, the market is overflowing with all different kinds of highlighters; different in formula and shades. It can be difficult to choose to right one for you.
How to pick highlighter for your skin type
Picking the right highlighter for your skin tone and type is a task but it doesn’t have to be! For dryer skin, stick to a creamy powder or an actual cream or liquid product. For oily skin, stick to a traditional powder because you don’t want the product slipping and sliding all over your skin.
How to pick the right brand
Becca Cosmetics is the queen of highlighters and they have formulas for everyone. Their Shimmering Skin Perfectors are the traditional, creamy powder; Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid and Poured are their liquid and creme highlighters.
How to pick the right color
As for shades, there are so many different ones to choose from and most shades are universal for all skin tones. Makeup is supposed to be fun, especially highlighter in 2017 when we have rainbow highlighters, so don’t let anyone tell you you can’t wear a certain shade.
For lighter skin tones, you typically go toward more light peach or pink shades and darker skin tones lean more toward champagne and bronze shades. Nowadays, every brand has something for everyone.
Right now, the hot trend is the ‘unicorn’, ethereal highlighter. It’s been around for a few months and it’s going to make a huge splash this summer as more brands hop on the trend. These products usually have a duo chrome finish and flash pink or purple. It’s something that may not be for everyone but it is interesting and really makes a statement! If you’re wanting to try this trend, try out the Laura Geller Diamond Dust highlighter or Stila’s Heaven Hue
As mentioned above, there are different types of highlighters; the traditional powders, stick highlighters, liquid highlights, and creme highlighters. They can all be used together or separately, depending on the look you’re going for.
For example, you can apply a sheer, highlighter stick before you apply foundation to create a more luminous finish to your makeup. After foundation, apply a creme or liquid highlighter and then the powder over it to create the ultimate POP of glow!
On no makeup days, you may opt to use the creme highlighter alone to give you a touch of something but not overdo it.
How to apply highlighter
Now that we went through all the types of highlighters on the market and who has the best, it’s time to discuss how to apply it. The most common place for people to apply highlighter is on the tops of your cheekbones. This brings the entire look together and draws your cheekbones forward.
Highlighter is also usually applied to the brow bone to lift the brows and the cupid’s bow to create the illusion of bigger lips. You can also apply it to the inner corner of your eye, down the bridge of your nose, and the center of your chin.
If you want to be truly creative, mix in a bit of your liquid highlighter with your primer or foundation to create your own formula. Using your highlighter as eyeshadow to add a bit of drama to the eyelid is also a great idea. The possibilities are truly endless!
There are no rules to highlighter, just do what you feel looks best on you!
