No way, rosé. We’re shaking up the season with a roundup of summer cocktails New Yorkers will stir, serve, and sip all season long. So leave last year’s #pinkdrink in the fridge and sample 2017’s boldest beverages.
Skip the calorie-heavy bucket of beer or third pitcher of sugary sweet margaritas. Nix, a vegetarian entrée emporium in Union Square, takes healthy fare from the kitchen to the bar. This Michelin-starred eatery mixes produce-centric cocktails – like Ready for Spring, a combination of fresh rubarb, white grape juices, mescal, and aperol, and Baja, which includes mango, paprika, lime, and tequila. Cheers to health-conscious cocktails with an urban twist!
No one loves New York more than New Yorkers. That’s why residents of the five iconic boroughs are elevating and embracing locally-owned distilleries. For example, Yonkers-based Empire Spirits Project distills a collection of domestic gins that utilize a variety of botanicals – not just tried-and-true juniper – to create unique flavor profiles that will surprise even the most seasoned gin enthusiast. Find Empire Spirits Project’s gin varieties – that boast names like NoHo and American Beauty – at bars and wine shops throughout the city. We recommend trying the award-winning Bloody Mary at Bubby’s, which is mixed with Empire Spirits Project’s smokiest gin.
I Scream, You Scream
Want your summer cocktails in a cup or cone? At Tipsy Scoop, Kips Bay’s crafty new claim-to-fame, scoops of ice cream are spiked with just enough bourbon, tequila, or rum to blast the heat and stimulate a summertime buzz. Further your #MillennialPink obsession with a serving of Strawberry White Sangria Sorbet, or fuel your classic spirit with Spiked Mint Chocolate Chip.
But Why is All the Rum Gone?
Because thirsty Manhattanites drank it all, that’s why! Rum-focused distilleries are popping up around the country (pop to District Distilling Co. on your next weekend trip to DC) and bars devoted to the sugarcane spirit have opened in cities from San Diego to Charleston. In New York, bartenders are reinterpreting old school standards, like the ubiquitous rum and coke, for an adventures palate. Hit up downtown hotspot, BlackTail, for a Rum & Cola – a signature sipper enhanced with champagne and bitters.
Rosé for Today
Okay, we can’t hate on summer’s favorite pink wine too much – because chances are, we’ll be drinking our fair share of rosé during Central Park the picnics we have planned every weekend between now and Labor Day. However, this year, we’ll be updating our rosé with an unexpected and tasty touch. We’ll combine with muddled watermelon and a splash of seltzer to create light and refreshing summer cocktails that are perfect for day drinking in the sunshine. Garnish with a lemon and sip with a pastel-colored swizzle straw for extra seasonal style. Cheers, y’all!
