Each Christmas I battle the holiday traffic to make a cross-country trip to California where I spent the first few years of my life. Most of my family still lives in Southern California – rough, I know! Christmas Eve begins with both sides of my family (although one side is Jewish) gathering in the backyard to soak up the sunshine, mix cocktails and eat entirely too much food. Christmas by the pool is only unusual to my east coast friends….
It’s Christmas morning when our family tradition gets interesting. Like many Mexican American families, the Christmas morning meal includes red and green tamales served with eggs, homemade salsa and plenty of avocado from the yard. But here’s the Twist – Christmas day also happens to be the wedding anniversary of my Jewish grandparents – so like many Jewish American families – we indulge in bagels, lox and tons of schmear. Not one after the other, not one or the other, both at the same time!
I’ve been told this is an uncommon holiday tradition, but it’s what I know. Plus, I find it wonderful celebrating two cultures at the same time!
