It was a breathtaking night at the Whitney Museum when we decided to pop in one Friday after work. Mother nature finally gave us a break from the heat and presented us with moderate temperature and a light breeze. So when we arrived at the new, contemporary, and totally awesome home to the Whitney Museum of American Art we spent considerable time out on the multi-level balcony watching the sun set over Manhattan.
Once the sun set we dived right in to the museum and began moving through US history via the compelling contemporary art pieces at this summers America is Hard to See exhibit. We thoroughly enjoyed the collection and had some really fun conversation about the installations. we suggest hurrying on over since the exhibit ends Sep. 27th. p.s the museum is pay what you can on Fridays throughout the summer!!!
We intended to finish off the night with a refreshing cocktail at the rooftop bar, but we ended up spending so much time enjoying the art that the bar was closed when we finally got there. Bummer. we weren’t totally upset though because the Whitney is now conveniently situated in the lower part of Chelsea – right by the meatpacking district, so we met up with some friends for a drink at the STK rooftop. The whitney turned out to be a perfect Friday night event! we will have to go back to experience the rooftop cocktail we were were so anticipating!
Our suggestion: unless you are a complete art aficionado and need tons of time – get to the museum early, go through the exhibit, and then catch the sunset while capping off the event at the rooftop bar. and if you are really ambitious……you’re in the right place for a night out.
