It started happening when I was in 9th grade. Puzzled high school students, coaches, strangers would tilt their head in disbelief, “Umm… do you ever get this? You remind me of that Clueless girl!” At first, I thought people were making fun of me and calling me “clueless,” – my mom even got in a fight with my tennis instructor because the team presented me with the “Clueless” gag award at the end of the year banquet! But, I quickly learned that people weren’t calling me clueless, they were comparing me to one of the most well-known movie characters of the 90’s – Cher Horowitz. As a 15-year-old highschooler (born in 1990), I hadn’t even seen the movie, but once I started getting these comments consistently, I made it a point to rent the movie from Blockbuster (#throwback) to check out this “Cher” chick. I have to admit, it was pretty creepy. Besides the physical similarities, the thing that most people can’t get over is that apparently we have a lot of the same mannerisms and facial expressions.
When I was living in Atlanta and “pursuing a career in acting” I was on set filming American Reunion with Seann William Scott (I had a very small appearance as Stifler’s intern LOL – see cameo here). I rode up and down in an elevator with Seann for about half an hour so we could get the perfect shot of us exiting the elevator, and even he couldn’t stop talking about how much I reminded him of “Alicia” (I’m assuming he knows her from the biz?).
When I moved to New York, I think the comments about looking like Alicia/Cher nearly tripled. I don’t know if it’s because Clueless circled back into pop culture, so people were constantly seeing memes, articles, Halloween costumes, etc. or what? Steph can attest to this. It’s always the same conversation, “Do you know who you look like?” or “What celebrity do people say you look like?” and I ALWAYS respond Alicia Silverstone, and I’m ALWAYS right.
SOOOO in honor of 90’s Fest coming up this weekend (who else is going?!), I did what I’ve NEVER done before – I dressed up as Cher Horowitz. And, I took to the streets of NYC in a yellow school girl outfit with a giant flip phone, and the reactions were priceless… LOLZ.
