I’m absolutely loving the jewel and blush tones at Christian Siriano, but what I love even more is the diversity on the runway! I interviewed my good friend and model Michelle Olson about her F/W ’17 debut, her new agency IMG Models, and her weekend snowboarding trips to Vermont.
How long have you been a model?
Was this your first time doing NYFW?
I’ve done one other for NYFW for Addition Elle/Ashley Graham but Christian Siriano was my first show that wasn’t exclusively a plus size show.
What was the best part about the Christian Siriano show?
The best part about this show for me was knowing that times are changing and getting to work with a designer that loves diversity. His collection was stunning and his designs for the curve girls were just as beautiful as for the straight size girls.
What was the casting/fitting/etc. process like?
I showed up early for the first casting, and there was already a big crowd of girls, but it was moving fast. We went in to give them a card and did a quick walk, and it was done. After that I had a fitting the following week and tried on a few pieces.
Is NYFW as crazy as it seems?!
Yes! There never seems to be enough time to finish all the girls’ hair, makeup, and nails and in the final minutes before the show starts everyone is always scrambling. This show was the craziest I’ve seen because of all the photographers and press in the room, it was so packed and loud.
How has the industry changed since you’ve been a model?
It has changed so much, there was hardly ever a plus size model in a magazine when I started and never any on the runway. There are a lot more plus size brands now as well.
Where would you like to see the industry in 5-10 years?
I would like to see more designers including more sizes on the runway as well as in campaigns and editorials. It’s still rare even though there are more than before, I’d love to see it become a regular thing.
Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
In the next five years I think I’ll still be in New York modeling, hopefully busy and booking some cool stuff!
Best and worst part of modeling?
The best part of modeling is getting to travel to cool places and also doing different stuff every day, its definitely not a desk job! That can also be a downside, you never know what you are doing the next week, sometimes even the next day. You have to go with the flow or you’ll go crazy!
Best job ever?
I got to do an editorial for V Magazine with a couple other curve models which had never been done before and hasn’t been done since! Hoping that changes and these editorials aren’t so far and few between.
I love staying active and getting outdoors as much as possible! A few of my favorite hobbies are snowboarding, surfing, hiking, and volleyball. I’m also obsessed with dogs, so I like to foster whenever I have time!
Until Next Time.
