New York City is as urban as it comes, but there are a surprising number of great places nearby for a quick escape. We’re particularly excited about Governor’s Island which opens for the season on May 1st. Governor’s Island is the perfect day trip / escape from NYC, and the good news is, it’s easy to get to and super cheap.
You can get to Governor’s island by ferry departing from lower Manhattan and Brooklyn which is free until 11:30am on the weekend, although leaving any other time probably won’t break the bank – it’s 2 bucks. The ferry ride itself is a great Insta opportunity with fantastic views of Manhattan and the statue of liberty!
Once you arrive on the island, head straight for the bike rental – your bike will serve as your mode of transportation for the day! The bikes even come with cute little baskets so you can haul around your purse, camera, etc. Spend your day outdoors biking around the island on the many bike paths, checking out Fort Jay, exploring the historical and abandoned Governor’s house and old military homes, relaxing in one of the comfy hammocks and grabbing an ice cream sandwich from melt bakery.
